Statements
Mission “To engage the youth of the State of South Carolina in the art of leadership in helping them develop and enhance those skills necessary to excel in their future endeavors.”
Background The South Carolina Youth Leadership Conference is the outgrowth of a long held desire to teach fundamental leadership skills to young adults at a critical time in their lives.  SCYLC itself was born as the result of a timely opportunity to learn of the Maine Youth Leadership Seminar with a rich, nearly 40 year history of success.  This awareness led to subsequent meetings in 2014 among key individuals in Beaufort County and the establishment of SCYLC.  While many fundamentals of the MYLS have been utilized in the establishment of SCYLC, the needs and demographics in South Carolina are significantly different and the conference has been modified to address those variances.
Impact
1.   Organization formed with State of South Carolina as a non-profit.
2.   Granted 501(c)3 status by the Internal Revenue Service
3.   Held initial, highly successful leadership conference
      Current:
1.   Highly successful second leadership conference
2.   Refinement of organizational roles and duties of volunteers
3.   Plans in place for third leadership conference - May 18-21, 2017
4.   Organizational / Strategic session January, 2017 with nationally recognized expert on Non-Profit organizations - John Bryson.
Needs
The single most important need at this time is funding for SCYLC-2017 in the amount [total need] of $20,000.  This supports 60 students and counselors for the May 18 - 21, 2017 event at USCB.
The second is funding of $3,000 in support of student scholarships.
Third, funding of approximately $5,000 for ongoing development of graduate programs in support of the practice of leadership among alumni

CEO/Executive Director Statement The key difference between SCYLC and other, similar programs is the development of the alumni program which will continue to work with students post graduation in encouraging them to practice leadership.  As an art, leadership must be practiced and that process will ultimately prove the greatest success of SCYLC.
Board Chair Statement The issue of personal leadership is a longtime passion.  Credit for this must be appropriately directed to two major sources; Merck &  Co., Inc. for the opportunity to lead within the organization and second to Barry Posner and Jim Kouzes, authors of The Leadership Challenge, a mainstay in leadership.  Leaders are made, not born.  If our young adults can be taught those lessons in their early to mid-teens they will be far ahead of those who do not learn these lessons until later in life when it may be too late to benefit.  SCYLC seeks to help our young adults learn these vital lessons when it can make a substantial difference in their lives

Comments
Organization Comments In our initial year of operation SCYLC funding was short of needs with the shortfall being made up by personal donations.  Similarly, in year two there was an initial shortfall made up through a matching grant.  In year three, the current year, we are making every effort to avoid further shortfalls through a program of early registration giving potential donors insight into what schools will be participating in SCYLC-2017.
