Mission

Planned Parenthood South Atlantic proactively ensures comprehensive reproductive health care by: providing reproductive health services in settings that preserve and protect the individual’s right to privacy and reproductive choice; advocating public policies which advance these rights and expand access to such services; providing educational programming that fosters a culture of healthy sexuality; working with and meeting the needs of diverse communities and the underserved; and leading broad-based strategies that further these fundamental rights.

Background

Planned Parenthood South Atlantic is an essential health care provider, committed to educating our communities and expanding and protecting access to reproductive health services. PPSAT works to reduce the incidence of unintended pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), especially among teens, emerging adults (19-29), those with limited financial resources and uninsured patients.

We operate 14 health centers throughout our four-state region that includes North Carolina, South Carolina, West Virginia, and the Blue Ridge of Virginia. For more than 55 years, Planned Parenthood has been recognized as a trusted provider of health care and education to women, men, and teens in South Carolina and the Lowcountry. We are an important safety-net provider and a respectful resource for direct health care and information. We offer confidential and affordable care, including birth control consultation and supplies, emergency contraception, gynecological exams, cancer screenings, pregnancy testing, STI testing and treatment, and HIV testing.

Impact
In January 2015, Planned Parenthood Health Systems merged with Planned Parenthood of Central North Carolina to become Planned Parenthood South Atlantic. Merger has given PPSAT the opportunity to increase our financial stability, build our infrastructure, provide the best possible services to the most people, and ultimately position ourselves to take full advantage of the opportunities the future will bring.

We recently launched online appointment scheduling (OAS) – which is making it easier for patients to schedule their own appointments anytime, day or night. Since rolling out this new service, almost 75% of appointments made through OAS have been booked after hours and 67% of those using OAS are new patients to us. This new service has truly expanded access to care.

Our education department has expanded and enhanced its services, which are among the most effective prevention tools at our disposal. We’ve hired an educator in Charleston, SC and we’ve invested in a sophisticated evidence-based education program – Health Improvement Projects for Teens (HIP Teens).

We've made huge strides in our efforts to engage patients and young people in advocacy. In South Carolina, we’re building health center advocacy programs in Columbia and Charleston, and we’ve started campus chapters at colleges throughout the state including historically Black colleges and universities.
Needs
Adopting new technologies to improve quality, efficiency, and accuracy in the administration of health services. The health center team ensures access to comprehensive reproductive health care by providing services in settings that preserve and protect an individual’s right to privacy, dignity, and choice. We seek to enhance these services by adopting the newest technologies to meet patient needs.

Expanding education services to underserved populations. Our Education Department works to make a long-term, positive impact on the sexual health of our communities. Planned Parenthood promotes positive sexuality, healthy behavior, and responsible choices, through implementing medically-accurate, intensive and balanced sexuality education programs.

Cultivating a core base of educated, engaged grassroots and grasstops supporters. We work diligently with national, state, and local policy makers to uphold access to comprehensive reproductive health care. We have a large network of grassroots supporters who are committed to defending and increasing access to family planning services, abortion services, and medically accurate sexuality education.

Upgrading our facilities to so that the exteriors match the level of care patients receive inside.

Enhancing security measures.

CEO/Executive Director Statement

From our 2016 Annual Report:

WE STAND TOGETHER.

In 2015-16, Planned Parenthood South Atlantic withstood attacks on our name, hostile legislatures in all four states, politically motivated investigations, and media campaigns intended to portray us unfavorably. Even so, patient demand and philanthropic support both reached record highs during our first year as PPSAT.

Last year, more than 35,000 patients accessed services at our 14 health centers. We also educated and gave information to nearly 18,000 people in schools, churches, and at community events, replacing fear with facts and galvanizing new advocates for reproductive health and justice. Every day, we reached out to people where they live, listening to what they need from us, and connecting them to the care that will help them live better, healthier lives.

But our work is far from over. In the wake of the presidential election outcome, it is evident our patients need the reliable and affordable care we provide now more than ever. Those patients will face significant new hurdles to getting care – including safe and legal abortion, and that makes our presence even more critical.

As an organization that has transformed women’s health since its founding 100 years ago, we are committed to fighting and continuing to provide our community with the highest-quality reproductive health care, education, and advocacy. However, we cannot be blind to the fact that there will undoubtedly be difficult fights to follow.

It’s your support and your confidence that enable us to deliver on the Planned Parenthood promise that everyone, no matter their background, income, insurance, sexuality, ideology, or immigration status, deserves compassionate care. And because of you, we will thrive for generations to come.

Experience

Having started her career with Planned Parenthood more than 15 years ago, Jenny brings leadership experience and expertise steeped in the care Planned Parenthood South Atlantic provides women, men, and teens every day.

Jenny first joined Planned Parenthood of New Mexico in 1997 as VP of Patient Services, where she grew the patient base in their five health centers located statewide. Through this experience, she gained a deep and abiding appreciation and understanding of the daily challenges and rewards involved in delivering healthcare to thousands of patients annually who rely on Planned Parenthood for high quality, nonjudgmental care.

From patient services and operations, Jenny transitioned to business development, seeking ways to improve and expand the bottom line. Within four years, she was promoted to CEO and President of Planned Parenthood of New Mexico, where she stayed until assuming the same role with Planned Parenthood of Maryland in 2012. In moving from New Mexico to Maryland, Jenny went from leading a $3.5 million organization with 5 health centers to running an $11 million dollar affiliate with 8 health centers, laying a solid foundation for her newest position as CEO of Planned Parenthood South Atlantic.
