Background
Local amateur radio operators have operated analog FM repeater systems on Hilton Head Island and in Bluffton for 25+ years.  The repeaters provide FM analog communication capability.  Communication capabilities have advanced over time.  Digital Mobile Radio ("DMR") technology has been adopted by the South Carolina emergency communication plan for state-wide emergency communication.  DMR repeaters have been installed in most other metropolitan communities in South Carolina with a connection into the S.C. state-wide E.O.C.  Southern Beaufort county needs this capability.

Georgia has decided to adopt a different mode for amateur radio digital communication known as "D-Star."  The Savannah E.O.C. will be using this technology for emergency amateur radio communication.
Impact
Past accomplishments:  None (new organization)
Future goals:
1) To install a DMR repeater for Hilton Head Island with connection to both the Town's Emergency Operations Center and to the S.C. State-wide Emergency Operation Center.
2)  To install DMR repeaters to serve Bluffton, Sun City, and Hardeeville with similar connection to the S.C. E.O.C.  Also, to install D-Star digital repeaters for Hilton Head Island and Bluffton for communication with the  Georgia emergency operation centers.

Needs Total capital cost for the 5 repeaters is $57,000

Board Chair Statement
Amateur radio operators have historically provided communication services during times of hurricanes and other natural disasters.  We must upgrade or communication capabilities to be part of the state-wide emergency communication system.

Amateur radio operators also assist some other charities and organizations, such as community runs, car shows, etc.  Updated communication capabilities are necessary to continue to meet these services.
