Mission

The Society of Bluffton Artists is a non-profit 501C3 organization established to promote a stimulating community environment for the visual arts and assist area students and artists in enhancing their artistic abilities.

Background

1994 – SOBA was founded by 7 local artists.  some of whom are still active members.

2002 – Applied for and received non-Profit Status.

2010 – Received the Mayor’s award for Best Gallery in Bluffton

2011 – After 13 years Soba moved from the old Library on Boundary Street to the current location of Calhoun and Church Streets incurring a change of $1.00 a year - to $1,000 a month.

2014 – Our landlord has built a building adjacent to the gallery to have classes in – right next to the gallery called: SOBA’s Center for Creative Arts .

We are artists from all walks of life.

We pride ourselves on our diversity

We display works of all artistic levels

We offer affordable original art and photography

We are all volunteers

Impact SOBA has worked with other Art Groups, like Palmetto Bluff, Spring Island and Beaufort Art Association on plein air activities and offering art classes to them.
  1. We give to one organization every year 10% of our profits. This year we gave 10% of one month’s profits to the Bluffton Fire & Rescue to put money towards replacing 13 year old defibulators.

  2. Soba gave out $3000 to a HS Senior accepted to a collage who is pursuing visual arts.

  3. In the months of late Nov & December we have started a Holiday Boutique which was very successful as it involved all members with small painting or other small art items.

  4. Soba started a Kindergarten to 5th grade art exhibition called the K-5 Exhibit. We contact the art teachers in September to recommend 2 students from each class by the month of April. We then have an exhibition in the CCA Building on a Sunday afternoon. It is very rewarding to see the children bringing their friends and family members their pieces of art. It is good for the teachers to come and see what the other schools are doing. We send out a Press Release to all the news media and we give a little reception with cookies and punch.

Needs Soba would like to subsidize a class from well-known artists to pay for the fees and travel expenses BUT offer these classes to our members at the same established local talent rate.   Maybe 1 or 2 a year to raise the bar of art at SOBA.

We would like to offer a bus tour to the Telfair Museum in Savannah, or to Columbia to he Fine Arts Museum and offer it for a nominal fee or even for free.

We would like to have all our members be professional about how to sell art – either their own or another members art – and not be afraid of the credit card machine.

We would like to bring our membership up to 200 members. Twenty.(20) more supporting members of $45 each would be nice. Even a sponsor would be great.

We need the financial confidence to have 200 members.
CEO/Executive Director Statement

We have had some situations where the artist forgets to sit the day he/she is to sit. We now have the person sitting on Monday call the Tuesday person and Tuesday sitter the Wednesday and so on and that eliminated the problem. We also have a list of people who are willing to sit at a moments notice and a list of people for $10/hour sitting for that individual.

We would like to reach out beyond Beaufort County. With the help of a $5,000 grant from the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry and additional monies from A-tax $7,000, we have hired a marketing organization to improve our web-site and facebook application. We have run a class on Facebook Marketing of Your Art with links back to the SOBA web page. Some have already sold art that was put on their personal Facebook.

Board Chair Statement

Success bring it challenges. We moved from Boundary Street to the corner of Calhoun and Church Streets. Our membership has grown to 180 in a very short time. Our rent went from $1.00 a year to over $1,000 a month. We absorbed that through a lot great art and a great group of people who volunteer because they love SOBA.

Programs
Description

The "After School Program" is run with 4th & 5th Grade students in all of the Bluffton Schools including home schooled children. The teachers are all retired school teachers volunteering their time.

We had a K5 program with students in all schools with recommendations from the art teachers. It was an amazing event where we exhibited the art in the CCA Building and had a reception for all the amazing artists.

We have started a Plein Air group that goes out painting at different locations. Doug Corkern has volunteered to assist in this effort.

We run art classes year round in oil, acrylic, watercolor, photography for all levels.  We invite known teaching artists to come to Bluffton to teach our members and advertise to the surrounding areas.  We run one member show, bringing in a judge and soliciting funds for the judge, prize money and publicity.

Short Term Success After membership of 1 year the artist is able to apply to be the Featured Artist for one month.  SOBA will focus on that individual and the membership supports each and every one.
Long Term Success After membership of 1 year the artist is able to apply to be the Featured Artist for one month.  SOBA will focus on that individual and the membership supports each and every one.
Program Success Monitored BY We are volunteers who help each other out at all events. Classes help the improvement and sales confirm the improvement.
