Background
Almost 50 years ago, Art League was the vision of the man whose name graces our gallery. Walter Greer thought Hilton Head Island was just the place for an artists’ community. Those of us who call this island home are blessed to have not only the well-preserved and natural environment from which to draw inspiration, but also the support of several hundred artists and art lovers who make up Art League of Hilton Head today.
 
We are the only 501 (c) (3) nonprofit visual arts organization on Hilton Head Island with a synergistic Art Gallery and Teaching Academy that welcomes artists and students at all levels and in all media.
 
 Learn art at Art League Academy! Our teaching Academy welcomes artists and students at all levels and in all media. Choose from over 30 art classes and workshops that change quarterly. Taught by professional art educators. Take one class or a series.
 
Art League Gallery features local artwork in all media created by more than 170 member artists. All artwork on display is for sale in our 2,000 square foot gallery. We showcase 2D, 3D, and jewelry. Exhibits change every month. Featured artist receptions are free and open to the public.
 
Impact
1) Extended partnerships within the community. Collaborating with RBC Heritage made for a once-in-a-lifetime exhibition. This effort brought together two huge island industries; art and golf. 
 
2) Gallery sales and visitor increase. Art League Gallery was voted best gallery in 2017 by the Island Packet Newspaper. In 2017, the gallery recorded record sales for its artist members and high volumes of traffic.
 
3) Academy workshops increased to a national level. Instructors were brought in from across the country bringing unparalleled teaching experiences to the Lowcountry.  
 
 
 
 
Needs

Memberships

Art League of Hilton Head needs to increase membership.  With over 40,000 residents on Hilton Head, we would like to see our membership reach 1k. Our current membership averages 400 individuals or families annually.

Outreach/Partnerships

Art League wishes to continue growing through outreach and partnerships within the community. Art League of Hilton Head would like to one day become a leader of the arts community on the island. We will continue to offer our gallery to be used for events for free and will soon begin renting out our Academy.

Innovative Programming

Hilton Head Island’s demographics are consitantly changing and more children are finding the island home. Art League Academy would like to grow to offer children’s classes and summer camps.

Marketing

Art League of Hilton Head is working on creating a new website. The new website will make it easier to become a member, sign up for a class or workshop, and find out about new and upcoming exhibitions at the gallery. Art League also plans to continue working on our strategic plan to discover where are future marketing dollars are best spent.

Volunteering

Art League has recently switched to paid staff versus volunteers to handle all operations. We are working on now providing volunteer opportunities which are more fun and engaging for our community.

Board Chair Statement

As a nonprofit art league, our biggest challenges are achieving a balance between art and business and how we are perceived in the community. In the last 4 years, we have moved from a predominate volunteer organization to a staff-run organization. By the beginning of 2018, we became fully staffed with professional and compassionate employees. We are in the process of contracting with SCORE to implement strategic planning which will lead to short and long-term strategies, revision of by-laws, updating procedure manuals and operational consistency although the board members will change annually.

My father was an amateur painter and a general lover of all the arts. We, 3 daughters, were dragged to museums, state capitals, Presidential libraries, art fares, you name it. This early exposure made me appreciate a wide variety of arts. I learned it doesn’t matter if I “like” a particular style or color in order to appreciate what the arts contribute to each community.

I moved to the island in 1980. My introduction to volunteerism was to assist the treasurer at Evening of the Arts. I was astounded and encouraged by the extensive visual arts in the community. At the time, the island was dark and I had no idea of all the arts and cultural hidden jewels. After my accounting career, raising kids and volunteering in a variety of organizations, I began giving my time and efforts to Art League of Hilton Head. It has brought together my love of the arts and desire to serve in my community.

My personal goal is for Art League of Hilton Head to be the cornerstone for the visual arts in our community, to contribute to HHI becoming an Arts & Cultural destination in addition to a premier golf, beach and tennis resort.

Serving a diverse group of 2 million annual Hilton Head Island visitors and over 40,000 full-time residents, Art League works to enhance Hilton Head’s position as one of the premier arts destinations in the country. Art League offers year-round visual arts exhibitions, classes, and programs in addition to partnering with local private and nonprofit businesses and institutions to expand our reach and ensure visual arts are part of the fabric of the Hilton Head Island community.

Description

CraftHiltonHead2018, 6th National Juried Fine Art Craft Guild Exhibition seeks 2D and 3D fine art craft entries that encompass exemplary creativity, experimentation, and imagination, showcasing what can be accomplished with few restrictions. Up to 90 works will be chosen by several esteemed jurors based on artistic excellence, innovation, and originality. This is a juried gallery show in a community that loves art and buys art. Over $4,000 in cash prizes will be awarded by a nationally recognized juror.

This exhibition will be free and open to the public from December 4 – 29, 2018 at Art League of Hilton Head's Gallery located inside Arts Center of Coastal Carolina on Hilton Head Island, SC. An opening reception and awards ceremony will be on Wednesday, December 5th from 5-7pm. Since the gallery is located inside the Arts Center, we expect to host an additional 100 to 200 theatre goers each evening in addition to our regular visitors.

Short Term Success Art League would like this December's craft show to be it's most successful one yet. Our goal is to increase sales from our previous show by 20% to $7,200 and increase entries by 35%. to $4,500.
Long Term Success
This is the 6th National Juried Craft show presented by Art League of Hilton Head. Every other December, this exhibit attracts artists and art lovers from across the country. We hope to make this show as successful as our Biennale, the island's longest-running juried show which just hosted it's 25 exhibition last May. 
 
Ultimately, Art League would like Craft Hilton Head to become one of the top juried craft shows in the United States. An exhibition of this sort allows for locals and tourists to view artwork from across the country, which they may not get exposed to otherwise.  
Program Success Monitored BY Callforentry.org manages all of the entries and allows us to keep records of each entries location. Art League's Bookkeeper then manages the entire budget with QuickBooks. A guestbook manages customer data based on where they live. These programs allow Art League to view the entire success of the exhibition based on funds raised and exposure by event attendees. 
Description

Art League of Hilton Head is made up of two locations: Art League Gallery and Art League Academy. Art League Academy opened its doors for business in September of 2003 with a primary goal of providing a state of the art facility with highly accredited instructors to teach art classes and workshops to Art League Members and to the public. Classes and workshops are offered all year around in many different mediums for all different levels of students.

Art League Academy offers four quarterly schedules of classes and workshops each year: winter, which runs January through March; spring, which runs April through June; summer, which runs July through September and fall, which runs October through December. Classes are three hours in length and run for three to four consecutive weeks. Workshops are three to six hours and run one to five consecutive days. Art League Academy publishes each of its quarterly schedules about six weeks before the session is set to begin. Publications are mailed to membership, shared at local businesses who have agreed to display them, shared at Art League Gallery, available online and are available at Art League Academy. While there are not age restrictions, due to timing, most of our classes and workshops are geared for adult students.

Twice a year, Art League Academy hosts The Academy Awards and Student Show Opening Reception. Current students are invited to exhibit one piece of artwork done in each of the classes or workshops they had participated in during that time period. Art League Academy brings in a juror to award ribbons for Best of Show, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and honorable mentions. Winners from this exhibition are invited to exhibit their winning pieces alongside a piece of their instructors work the following month at Art League Gallery. The awards and reception are a great way to encourage students to keep working and improving their talents by taking more classes and workshops.

Short Term Success Art League Academy is hopeful that 2018 will be a very successful year. Our budget for tuition from classes and workshops is $78,000. As of March 29, 2018, Art League Academy is already at $31,704.00, nearly 40% of our annual budget with 75% of the year still remaining.
Long Term Success


Art League of Hilton Head hopes to see continued growth out of Art League Academy over the next 5 years. Redesigning the quarterly schedule and Art League’s website are two ways that Art League Academy will be able to reach a wider range of people with information regarding classes and workshops. Art League of Hilton Head also is in the process of exploring the possibility of teaching classes and workshops designed specifically for the youth during times they would be able to attend. The addition of classes for youth will help gain well rounded members for Art League of Hilton Head. These young students could potentially continue taking classes and workshops from us as they grow up.
Program Success Monitored BY Art League’s Treasurer and Board of Directors develops the annual budget based upon prior years’ experience and estimated results from marketing materials. Art League’s Bookkeeper enters all of the sales from class and workshop registrations into QuickBooks.  QuickBooks allows us to compare our budget to our actual sales, which allows us to see the overall success of the classes and workshops.
Description
Art League Academy hosts a monthly family fun night one Friday evening each month, for an hour. The goal of the Fun Night is to give families of all ages and sizes a place to spend quality one on one time together learning about Art and the importance of working together.

Together, each family works to complete a collaborative art project. Each week the project changes so that families can continue to come each month if they enjoy it. Every member of each family works on an individual aspect of the project, which are then compiled to form one overall family piece of art.

Often times materials used are recycled materials, which helps families see that it doesn’t take a lot of money to be creative and will hopefully inspire families to do similar art projects together at home.

Short Term Success While this is a very new program just beginning in February of this year, we had 4 different families attend our first session. The theme was HeART work, to go along with Valentine ’s Day. We offered an introductory rate of $35 per family instead of our normal $45 per family. Art League of Hilton Head brought in about $63 our first session, after all expenses were paid. Based upon experience, it will take a few months to get the event running in a more effective manner and for word to get around about the event.

Biennale 2019, Art League of Hilton Head's 26th Nation Juried Exhibition. 
 
This national juried exhibition is Hilton Head Island's longest running national juried art exhibition. It is a wonderful opportunity to see the talents of artists from around the country. With over 550 entries to choose from in 2015, all of the attendees
enjoyed the works selected for the exhibition. 

Biennale 2019 will be held in May 2019 with over $7,000 in cash prizes to be awarded.

Short Term Success Art League of Hilton Head would like to see a 10% growth in entries for Biennale 2019.
Long Term Success The Biennale is Hilton Head's longest running juried art exhibition. In 2019, Art League will host the 26th event. This event has become a premier event which attracts artists and art lovers from across the country. In the future, Art League would like to make this one of the largest juried shows in the southeast.

Description

Art League of Hilton Head holds an annual fundraiser called Got Art? Got Art is currently Art League of Hilton Head’s main fundraising event. Art League of Hilton Head asks it’s exhibiting members and academy instructors to donate a completed and framed piece of artwork, jewelry set, or 3-Dimensional piece valued at $200 or more. We count on receiving around 110 pieces of donated artwork each year. Art League sells 100 tickets for $100 each to this event. Each ticket has a number and admits two people into the event, which takes place one evening in October.

All donated works are hung in the gallery the day before the event is held. Ticket holders are invited to come early the night of the event to view the works exhibited and to pick their favorites. There is a random drawing the evening of the event. As each ticketholder’s number is drawn, they select a piece from the exhibit to take with them. The last person drawn should still have multiple pieces to choose from.

Short Term Success 2017 was the first year that Art League sold all 100 tickets to the event. While the number of tickets has to be limited to 100 for the exclusivity of the event, Art Leagues to sell all tickets again this October. In 2016, only 86 tickets sold, which shows a 16% increase in ticket sales in one years time.
Long Term Success Art League of Hilton Head hopes that Got Art? will grow as a premier Island Event of the Arts. In five years’ time, Art League of Hilton Head hopes that all 100 tickets will sell out at a much quicker pace.
Program Success Monitored BY Each ticket sold is entered into QuickBooks by Art League’s bookkeeper. A report in QuickBooks will show the total number of tickets sold per year and allow us to compare each year to years past.
