Statements
Mission To protect, preserve, and promote the history and cultural heritage of the Town of Bluffton, South Carolina through education, marketing, hands-on preservation of buildings and sites, maintenance of the Caldwell Archives, and Operation of the Heyward House Historic Center.
Background The Bluffton Historical Preservation Society was founded in 1981 by W. Hunter Saussy and several farsighted residents of Bluffton. Today the organization plays a vital role as the town's historical authority which facilitates research for residents, provides access to the Caldwell Archives, and guides the community in historical preservation projects.
Impact

1. The BHPS recently initiated the Archive Preservation Project. This project seeks to preserve valuable documents held in the Caldwell Archive library through digitization and safeguarding.

2. Through the Heyward House Historic Center we significantly increased educational outreach to local children by offering summer programs such as archaeology, 19th century candle-making, scavenger hunts, and quilt block-making.

3. We created two technology based tours that will appeal to a younger demographic or to those who want a new tour experience.

4. In FY2014/2015 we broke the record for most annual visitors with 11,539 total visitors.

Needs As a non-profit with limited funds we are in need of financial assistance to carry out the vital Archive Preservation Project. We also are responsible for maintaining two historic homes in Old Town Bluffton. The Heyward House was built in 1841 and is one of only ten structures which survived the burning of Bluffton in 1863 and the Hurricane of 1893. In addition the BHPS is in dire need of financial assistance that will enable us to better secure our valuable documents from fire and theft.
Areas of Service
Although the Society serves Bluffton, SC, we serve a far reaching demographic as the official Welcome Center of Bluffton. Approximately 85% of our visitors are not local. We provide residents and visitors alike with maps, brochures, and information on sites from Charleston down to Savannah.
