Mission The mission of Med-I-Assist is to provide free medicine prescription assistance, doctor appointments, eye exams and eye glasses to the underemployed, unemployed, uninsured and individuals who have low or no income and cannot afford these services.
Background

We are located at 141 Goethe RD, Bluffton, SC 29910. Our phone number is 843-757-4818 and our fax number is 843-757-4595. We have a Board of Directors of 3 people and a President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. We are staffed by 11 volunteers with backgrounds in nursing, law, social service and government and other private sector jobs.
Med-I-Assist does not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, legality, national origin or sexual preference
Impact
1. We have been able to raise the funds we need to meet our current expenses which is always a challenge.
2  We have served an ever- increasing number of clients and continue to reach others who need our services.                                                            3  We have partnered with referring organizations throughout the two counties and the wonderful organizations which support us.
These have been and continue to be the goals we seek to accomplish

Needs We are well staffed and managed. Our primary need is funds to support our programs. Our annual budget is currently $60,500 a year the major portion of which funds the eye care program We need to raise this amount each year.. We have a growing population of clients so it is difficult to estimate our dollar needs in any one year so we have set up a small reserve in the event funds do not become available from grants and contributions
CEO/Executive Director Statement We expect to serve approximately 400 clients with free eye exams and free glasses in 2018. We expect to serve another 35 clients with free prescription assistance and doctor appointments. Many of our clients are legally blind so we are enebling them to see at their optimal level. Many are driving when they can't see well so we are making their lives and the lives of others safer. We are also making it possible for some clients to get or keep jobs. We are giving them back the pleasures of  life that come with good eye sight. We believe a better seeing person has a better sense of wellbeing and can better contribute to a stronger and healthier society
Board Chair Statement We are driven by our faith and our love and compassion for the poor and suffering. Because we are a small organization we really do not have governance problems. We have 11 dedicated volunteers who go above and beyond in helping others. We have established a resource list of other organizations which help the low income people.so after we have provided our assistance we can lead them to other resources for help. We know that low income people often have more than one problem they face so our volunteers try to help them in every way we can. Because there is such a strong need for our services we are always have a planning challenge to estimate needs and in turn the funds that will be needed to meet those needs. We try to be realistic but ,of course, we will always be off the mark on our needs. We have set up a small reserve to make sure we can help those who need us.
CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments
We are very conscious of the costs we incur for operations. We have free rent and utilities and there are no compensated volunteers or employees. We only pay for office supplies and telephone which together cost around $1,300 a year. All other money we receive goes to pay for the free services we offer our clients.
Med-I-Assist collaborates with all the local hospitals, four free medical clinics. the social service organizations and charities in the area, doctor's offices and anyone else who sends to us those in need of our services.

Comments
The Board of Directors sets the policy for the company. It is small and allows for quick call of meetings. Since all of the members of the Board are volunteers they are on site every week and can have meetings when necessary with a waiver of notice.  We always face the challenge of raising funds and when we expand our services. For example: this year we have increased the income level for eligibility and are now providing free eye exams and glasses once a year for those whose health requires it. We do not really know the financial impact from these changes but know that costs will increse. The Board does it's best to estimate this and increase our reserves. The Board operates smoothly and votes unanimously on all issues since they are individually involved in operations. The officers carry out the policies adopted by the board

Description

Med-I-Assist provides free eye examinations and free glasses to the low income residents of Beaufort and Jasper counties. We screen clients to make sure they qualify on an income basis and are residents of Beaufort or Jasper counties. Once qualified, clients are given a $75.00 voucher to pay for a scheduled eye exam on either Hilton Head or in Bluffton and the rest of Beaufort and Jasper counties. On Hilton Head, they are sent to an eye doctor at the Walmart store on the Island When they have received the eye exam they are given a prescription which they bring back to Med-I-Assist. We have also entered into a contract with Walmart to provide single lens or bifocal glasses for $38.00 or $58.00 respectively. When the client returns to Med-I-Assist, we then give him/her the Walmart voucher to pay for his/her glasses. The client then returns to Walmart with the voucher and the eyeglass prescription and they make up the glasses in 4-5 days. In Bluffton and the rest of Beaufort and Jasper counties, we have entered into an agreement with Eye Site of Bluffton LLC to provide eye exams and glasses at the same price as Walmart charges which allows the client to make only one visit to get both the eye exam and the glasses

Budget $41,242.00
