What is The Giving Marketplace?

The Giving Marketplace provides access to in-depth information about area nonprofits, including financial, governance and programmatic details. Powered by GuideStar, and supported by the Community Foundation staff, the database is the largest collection of Lowcountry nonprofits available.

This powerful philanthropic tool is a resource for nonprofits, donors, funders or anyone interested in the essential services provided by our vibrant nonprofit community. Through this site, visitors will be able to access information and make credit card contributions to local nonprofit organizations. All services are completely free to the public and to participating nonprofits.

What is GuideStar?

GuideStar’s mission is to revolutionize philanthropy and nonprofit practice by providing information that advances transparency, enables users to make better decisions and encourages charitable giving.

GuideStar connects people and organizations with information on the programs and finances of more than 1.8 million IRS-recognized nonprofits. They serve a wide audience including individual donors, nonprofit leaders, grantmakers, government officials, academic researchers and the media.

Is data entered on The Giving Marketplace shared with Guidestar?

Data is transferred from The Giving Marketplace’s profiles to the GuideStar profiles on a quarterly basis.

Why has the Community Foundation launched The Giving Marketplace?

The goals of The Giving Markeplace as a platform are in line with the mission of the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry to strengthen community by connecting people, resources and needs.

By sharing knowledge through The Giving Marketplace, we hope to inspire donors, strengthen nonprofit organizations and increase the awareness of local philanthropic opportunities.

Why is it important for our organization to have a profile on The Giving Marketplace?

Donors are growing more sophisticated in their philanthropic decision making. They want clear descriptions of nonprofits’ missions and strategies. They want assurance that they’re investing in organizations which operate efficiently and effectively. And they want access to this information before making a gift. The Giving Marketplace serves as a “one stop shop” where donors can get the information they seek.

Participating in The Giving Marketplace has many benefits for nonprofits. It:

  • helps you connect with and identify new donors
  • showcases your services and need for support
  • lends additional credibility to your organization
  • serves as an added avenue for you to expand your community outreach and marketing, giving you the ability to include photos and videos of your work

Additionally, it:

  • connects donors to causes they care about
  • provides an easily-accessible, one-stop source for information donors use to make giving decisions
  • offers donors a way to make an online gift to YOUR nonprofit

There is no cost for a nonprofit to participate. In fact, Community Foundation of the Lowcountry absorbs all credit card processing fees when online gifts are made to your organization through The Giving Marketplace.

Does the Community Foundation endorse organizations?

The Giving Marketplace is not a charity evaluator or a watchdog. We collect, organize, and present information about local nonprofits while remaining neutral.


Does the Community Foundation guarantee the accuracy of data?

The narrative information in each profile is voluntarily provided by the nonprofit. The Giving Marketplace does not guarantee the accuracy of any such data, make any representations or warranties with regard to nonprofits in the database, or verify they are in compliance with all state and federal requirements. However, we will seek to include the most accurate data available through document verification and a due diligence process.

Why are some nonprofits not included?

The Giving Marketplace contains profiles of 501(c)(3) public charities in Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton and Jasper Counties, SC, as well as some regional/national organizations serving this area. The database does not contain profiles for religious organizations operating for religious purposes (i.e. churches, synagogues, mosques). If your favorite organization is missing, we welcome the opportunity to assist them in creating a profile. Get started here.

Can I print an organizational profile?

Yes, while logged into the profile, click on “Preview” and then “View Printable Profile”. This will create a pdf version of the profile that can be saved, shared or printed.

How do I submit changes so that they can be published by the Community Foundation?

Click on “Send to Foundation” to submit any changes to your profile, so they may be reviewed and posted by our staff.


How are gifts made through The Giving Marketplace processed?

All donations through the site are donations to the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry and will be acknowledged by the Community Foundation. The gift will be awarded as a grant from the Community Foundation to the organization chosen by the donor. All credit card gifts through The Giving Marketplace are processed via

What fees are associated with donations made through The Giving Marketplace?

Fees associated with The Giving Marketplace are assessed by third-party vendors and are absorbed by the Community Foundation.

How long does it take to receive donations?

Gifts made by donors through an organization’s profile are reflected in monthly donation reports available on each organization's Nonprofit Homepage. The donation report will list the donor’s contact information, unless they request to be anonymous.

Are gifts made through The Giving Marketplace tax deductible?

Donations through The Giving Marketplace must be 100% tax deductible. The Giving Marketplace cannot be used to sell tickets, products, services or any items where the donor receives a market value.
